Why did the fans quit blowing and why are we coming to a stop?
We're out in the tundra (perhaps between Thompson and Churchill), the closest I have been to the middle of nowhere with the tracks and power lines as the only reminders of civilization. there are no roads here. I noticed the fans conk out as we left the dining car and I knew something was up. By the time we reached the observation car at the end we were coming to a stop. The HEP kept tripping as we later found out. You can see the conductor, engineer, and a passenger who just happened to be a retired engineer walking the train a couple of times checking connections and disappearing into the second locomotive. It was a wise decision to stop now and fix the head end power while the sun was still keeping us warm and it would take us about 2 hours of just sitting here if I remember right. the bar was right below us and it still worked so my memory of time might be happily fuzzy. When the retired engineer took up his clark kent passenger status a number of the other passengers bought him a couple of drinks. I would not have traded this experience for any boring air or car travel.
